Ramya Krishnan is making a powerful comeback with Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali. The pretty actress who became busy doing daily soaps for television which she also co-produces says that she first said ‘no’ to the Baahubali offer.“Maybe, I was destined to enact the significant character ‘Sivagami’ in this masterpiece,” Ramya says as she starts her conversation with DC. “Initially when they told me that they required 45 to 50 days of my time which would span across year, I politely refused. They went to Sridevi and a few others but came back to me again. My producer Shobu said, ‘Just listen to the script once and then decide whether to take it or leave it. I know ways of yawning covertly while listening to the story (laughs) so that the other person won’t realise it.
Even with the Baahubali narration I was initially sleepy, but half way though, it got so fascinating that I was literally drawn into it. I could visualise myself performing the character Sivagami and without wasting time I gave the go ahead’.”On her plum role she says, “I would say that it is a very powerful role for a woman to play in Indian cinema. She is the fulcrum of the movie. I can’t reveal much but all I can say is that I am excited and honoured that Rajamouli garu considered me for this epic period drama.”
Describing how she got references to play her character Ramya says, “When Rajamouli garu is there, you can rest assured. An artiste can go blank and just listen to what he says, that’s enough for one to score. He is a master craftsman who does meticulous homework with the artistic story board presentation even for a minuscule character in the film.” The actress has been receiving rave comments for dubbing her own voice with great modulation for the film ever since the trailer was released.
“Do you know something? Even though I am fluent in Tamil and Telugu, my voice was rejected when I started as a heroine since the filmmakers felt I didn’t have a feminine voice. Thanks to Padayappa, everything changed. (chuckles). Although I have dubbed for the Telugu version of Panchathanthiram, I can term this as my first T’town movie where I dubbed my voice because the language is shuddha (pure) Telugu and it was tough. But I loved it.”
So, can we get to see you more in films now? “I am happy with whatever I am doing now. I will take whatever comes my way provided it has substance. Currently, I am working in a Telugu movie Soggade Chinni Nayana with Nagarjuna".
We hear that you are into real estate business? “Even I heard that (laughs). No, I am not into the real estate business.” Ramya says that her whole being revolves around her little son Ritwik who completes her life and fills it with meaning.
