SS Rajamouli's magnum opus Baahubali raced past the vaunted Rs 500-crore mark on Sunday after staying strong at the worlwide box office for four weeks since its release.
This is the first time that a film made in a language that's not Hindi has managed to earn over Rs 500 crore and enter this hallowed club, reported Forbes magazine. A mythological drama about two brothers at war for a kingdom, the film stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles.
PK and Dhoom 3, both starring Aamir Khan, were the films which earlier made over Rs 500 crore. There were concerns that Baahubali will not be able to fend off competition from Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan but both the films have held their own at the box office.
Baahubali has managed to hang on to more than 2,000 screens around the world in its fourth week. It has earned praise for its amazing special effects and its massive scale.
The film has also earned praise from film personalities and critics alike. Shah Rukh Khan on Sunday took to Twitter to thank the film's team.
"To everyone involved, thanks for the inspiration. You can only reach the sky if you are willing to take the leap!" Shah Rukh tweeted on Sunday.
The second part in the Rs 250-crore franchise is slated for release next year. The film has already 40 percent been completed and is also directed by SS Rajamouli.
